The Best New Original Content On Streaming Sites

I think we can all agree that 2020 has not been a good year for the world in general. However, while many of our plans have been cancelled and our lives have been put on hold, there has still been a steady stream of excellent streaming content coming to our screens. 2021 may not be so lucky, due to disruption of filming, but let’s enjoy it while we can!

With HBO one of the few exceptions, streaming sites have been blowing the competition out of the water with original content. There are series and films that are able to follow different kinds of patterns than were once set in stone, due to the format change.

If you are not up to date on the great original streaming shows out there, this list is for you. For those who do not have access to all the streaming sites, due to geo-restrictions, click here to learn more about how to use a VPN to get around the problem.

Homecoming (Prime Video)

Homecoming on Amazon Prime Video has flown under the radar, which is strange considering its incredible cast. An anthology series about a private company’s dubious plans to help returning veterans (among other things), the first season stars Julia Roberts and Bobby Canavale. The second season came out earlier this year, with a great performance from Janelle Monae. It is a suspenseful drama that builds carefully from one episode to the next.

Upload (Prime Video)

Upload is fun, while also being ominous and existentially troubling. It follows a man who dies and is uploaded into an AI version of the afterlife by his rich girlfriend’s family. This afterlife is a consumerist dream (or nightmare). He needs to keep his girlfriend happy so that she continues giving him money to access such luxuries as snacks and gaming. Meanwhile, he falls in love with a living human customer support agent and realizes his death happened under suspicious circumstances.

Teenage Bounty Hunters (Netflix)

Teenage Bounty Hunters follows two twin sisters who accidentally catch a fugitive and end up pursuing a career in bounty hunting. They do all this while juggling relationships, expectations from their extremely religious school, and parental secrets and lies. It is a whole lot of fun, and doesn’t take itself too seriously, making it perfect for a weekend binge watch.

Warrior Nun (Netflix)

Yet another Netflix Original with a name that borders on the absurd, Warrior Nun is actually an intriguing, suspenseful action series. A young girl who has just died is given a second chance as she becomes the carrier of a sacred object granted to her convent by an angel. But in spite of her desires to escape and live her own life, she is burdened with the responsibility to carry out the convent’s missions.

Dark (Netflix)

Dark just wrapped up its final season on Netflix. A slow-burning German science-fiction series, it starts with the disappearance of a child in a small German town. This town’s economic make-up is fed by the local nuclear plant, which is hiding some big secrets. The show has garnered critical acclaim and is loved by fans around the world.
