Yellowstone National Park: Prismatic Spring, Old Faithful Geyser & Volcanoes

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park is situated within the state of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho; United States. Yellowstone is known to be the first National Park in the world. Yellowstone National park is famous for its wildlife and its geothermal features.

One such most popular feature in the Yellowstone national park is the Old Faithful Geyser which is a cone shape geyser and erupts almost in every 80 minutes. Yellowstone National Park also consists of topographic feature that divides the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean water drainage, Continental Divide which runs diagonally through the south western part of this park.

Yellowstone National Park has an area of about 3,468.4 square miles which consists of Canyons, Lakes, Mountain Ranges and Rivers. This park also consists of Yellowstone Lake which is one of the largest high altitude lakes in North America.

Yellowstone Lake is located over the largest and active super volcano in Yellowstone national park, Yellowstone Caldera. Due to this the Yellowstone River also flows towards the Atlantic Ocean through the Gulf of Mexico in Yellowstone national park.

Yellowstone National Park is situated on the Yellowstone Plateau at an elevation of about 8,000 feet above sea level. The plateau is surrounded by mountain ranges of the Middle Rocky Mountains which are 11,000 feet in elevation. The highest point in the Yellowstone national park is Eagle Peak and the lowest is along the Reese Creek.

Let’s take a look at some of the most popular attractions for Yellowstone tours.

1. Grand Prismatic Spring

The presence of different colors in the spring is due to the result of pigmented bacteria in the microbial mats that grows around the sides of the mineral rich water. These bacteria release different colors in the microbial mats depending on the ratio of chlorophyll and the temperature of water. The deep blue color of this hot spring is due to the absorption and scattering of lights.

2. Yellowstone National Park: Old Faithful Geyser

Old Faithful is a popular cone shape geyser situated in the Yellowstone National Park, U.S. This geyser is famous for its geothermal features which erupt almost in every 80 minutes. These eruptions shoot up to 8,400 gallons of boiling water to a height of around 180 feet for 1 to 5 minutes.

Over the years, Yellowstone National Park has experienced many earthquakes. Some were of less magnitude and some of higher magnitude. In 2007, there were 16 small earthquakes with the magnitude of 2.7 which occurred in the Yellowstone national park. The researchers are also trying to find out the volume of molten magma under the surface of Yellowstone national park in order to predict the future eruptions.

3. Volcanoes

The researchers have found that the North America has slowly shifted over the largest and active super volcano of Yellowstone National Park. The Yellowstone Plume had punched through the continent’s crust leaving a bread crumb like trail of Calderas which is created due to huge volcanic eruptions. The magma chamber is the source of the amazing springs and geysers in the Yellowstone national park.

The scientists have found that the underground magma chamber has become a single chamber which is about 37 miles long, 18 miles wide and 7 miles deep. Earlier they believed that the magma was in separate blobs not in a continuous pocket in Yellowstone national park.
