Whether you want to put the finishing touch on a new space after buying one of the Albany houses for sale, are looking for more privacy, block out sunlight that prevents you from sleeping in, or you’re hoping to save on your utility bill, an analysis by the U.S. Department of Energy found that curtains and other window coverings could save significant energy usage, curtains can be an important addition for any room.
You know you want curtains for whatever reason, perhaps all of the above, but now you’re staring at a bare window, not sure how to hang them. While it may seem difficult and possibly risky using a ladder, it’s surprisingly quick and easy, providing you know the right steps and have the tools. Here’s how to install them in just four simple steps.
Take Measurements Before Shopping for Your New Curtains
You need to make sure you have the right size curtains and rods before you buy, so measure your windows before shopping. The length of the rod is determined by measuring the width of the window and adding eight to 12 inches. Each curtain panel needs to be at least as wide as the window. Measure from the spot you plan to hang it, which is typically four to six inches above your window, but at least two inches, and down to the floor to determine how long the curtains should be. If you want them to pool, add more length.
Gather Up All the Tools and Materials Necessary
After you have your curtains, rods, and hardware, you’ll want to make sure you have all the other necessary tools to get started, which will make the entire project go faster. You don’t want to stop in the middle and realize you need to go to the hardware store. You’ll need a ladder or step stool, a pencil, level, safety glasses, drill and drill bit, stud finder, and iron. Wall anchors may be necessary too.
Installing the Brackets
Using a pencil, mark the drill holes for the brackets, which should be placed at the height you determined before buying your curtains, about four to six inches from the side of the window frame. That will allow you to open the curtains up all the way. Be sure the marks are level or your entire window treatment will end up crooked. A stud finder will help ensure your brackets are lined up with studs. If they aren’t, you’ll need to install the anchors after drilling the holes. Drill your holes and then screw the brackets into the walls.
Installing the Curtains and Rod
Before installing the curtains, if you’ve taken them right out of their package, you’ll need to iron out the wrinkles and creases. Next, remove the finials (the decorative accessories at the top) from the rod and then thread the curtain onto it. Depending on which kind of bracket it is, it may be necessary to place the rod into the bracket first and then replace the finials. The bracket may have screws in it already in order to keep the rod in place, which means they’ll need to be tightened after you install the rod.
